The IEA global community is hard at work organising many exciting events, including conferences and webinars, in 2025. Keep up to date with the latest events and news to ensure that your 2025 is filled with all things HFE. In this edition, the ‘Announcements’ section includes exciting updates regarding IEA2027 as well as updates about the IEA Executive Committee and Council meetings, Awardees, and news from the IEA President who has attended several conferences and meetings around the world this month. The “Upcoming Events” section includes information on several exciting HFE events taking place in 2025 and 2026. In the Spotlight on IEA Technical Committees feature, we showcase the Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments Technical Committee and the important work they are doing to promote ergonomics principles for students and their learning environments. As always, we appreciate the ongoing support and commitment of the global IEA community to share updates that will be of interest to our community. Exciting news about IEA2027!

The Chartered Institute Ergonomics and Human Factors is excited to share the venue for IEA2027 in London. The next IEA Congress will take place at Excel London from the 23^rd to the 25^th of August 2027. We are excited to share some important dates for this event:

IEA Executive Committee and Council meetings

The IEA Executive Committee and Council meetings took place in Beijing, China in October hosted by the Chinese Ergonomics Society on the Tsinghua University campus with support from Sustaining Members Kingfar and Tsinghua University. The Executive Committee met on the 26th and 27th of October and included discussions around reports and actions performed in the last period. During that meeting IEA endorsed the journal Ergonomics, published by Taylor and Francis.

The IEA Council met on the 28th and 29th of October and included representatives of 36 Federated Societies, 1 Affiliated society, and 3 IEA Networks. In total, 74 voting members were represented (including 19 proxy votes). Highlights of the meeting included:

• Announcement of 2025 IEA awardees and fellows (see separate announcement).
• A presentation by Carisa Harris on the ILO Convention Report writing committee currently being prepared: The role of Human Factors and Ergonomics in providing decent work, which inspired the workshop discussions that followed (how can this document be used to enhance interactions with stakeholders, how should it be communicated and how should we measure its impact). If you know of people that would be an asset to the review of this document or wish to share your knowledge in relevant elements, please contact Carisa directly or via secretariat@iea.cc. The first version of this document has been shared with the IEA officers and can be made available upon request, although the second draft is already due at the end of November 2025. There will be opportunities for refinement after that. 
• A visit by Council of the impressive laboratory spaces of the Tsinghua University’s Fundamental Industry Training Centre (ICentre). 
• Approval of the application for Federated Society membership of the Asociación de Ergonomía y Factores Humanos – ASERFHU of Bolivia. Watch for their information to be posted soon on the IEA.cc website! 

The Council meeting was followed by invited participation in the 2025 International Conference on Human Factors Engineering and Interaction with AI systems, organized principally by Tsinghua University with several co-organizers and supporting organizations. That conference was held 30 October to 1 November in Beijing. IEA President, Andrew Thatcher, presented a keynote address “Grand challenges for HFE: Preparing for the future of work”, introduced by IEA Past President, Jose Orlando Gomes. The IEA acknowledges the very generous financial support from this year’s Council meeting hosts which facilitated in-person participation (travel and lodgings) for many of IEA’s Member Societies resulting in rich interactions and great suggestions for the future.

IEA AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

We have many 2025 awardees to celebrate. Annual awards include the IEA Fellow Award, the IEA/Tsinghua Award, and the IEA/Kingfar Awards:

2025 IEA Fellows

The IEA Fellow Award recognizes outstanding and sustained performance in the field of ergonomics and human factors at an international level, as well as an extensive publication record in international journals or international consulting or service at a high level. In 2025 we had 10 nominations, and all candidates were approved by 2/3 of the selection committee and confirmed by the IEA Executive Committee. Congratulations to the new IEA Fellows!

2025 IEA/Kingfar and IEA/Tsinghua Awards 

Many thanks again to Tsinghua University and Kingfar Beijing for the MOU renewal to continue the sponsorship of these awards. The awards are accomplishing their goals to cultivate global citizens who will thrive in today's world and become tomorrow's leaders, to significantly promote and reward high-quality original research and applications on new and emerging HFE issues or issues specifically related to industrially developing countries (IDCs), and to promote a career path in HFE. 

This year we received 3 nominations for the IEA/Tsinghua Award, 11 nominations for the IEA/Kingfar Student Award, and 9 nominations for the IEA/Kingfar Early Career Researcher Award. The candidates are representatives of IEA´s worldwide membership. Competition has been especially high for the IEA/Kingfar awards. Congratulations to the new IEA Awardees!

The IEA/Tsinghua Award for Collaborative Human Factors/Ergonomics Education honors persons (e.g. researchers, teachers) who, through international and/or inter-regional collaboration, have made significant and outstanding contributions to the success of postgraduate educational programs that include HFE courses or substantial HFE content in the curriculum. Applications are evaluated by renowned international reviewers, and we thank the selection committee chair, Prof. Mario Vidal, and his team for their excellent work. The 2025 IEA/Tsinghua Awardee is Prof. Kai Way Li - Chinese Ergonomics Society (CES).

The IEA/Kingfar Award for Research in Human Factors and Ergonomics Issues is given annually to honor students and early career researchers who have high-quality human factors/ ergonomics (HFE) research achievements. The purpose of the award is to significantly promote and reward high-quality original research and applications on new and emerging HFE issues or issues specifically related to industrially developing countries (IDCs), as well as to promote a career path in HFE.

HFES ASPIRE meeting in Chicago: IEA President update

In the week of 13-17 October 2025 the IEA President was fortunate to attend the HFES ASPIRE Meeting in Chicago. He was able to meet up with the HFES President, Camille Peres, and the HFES President-Elect (now President), Caroline Cao. Included in the meeting programme was an open discussion with HFES President, Camille Peres, called the "IEA/HFES Fireside Chat". This session was an open, collaborative discussion on the current political situation in the USA, the impact of this on HFE within and outside of the USA, and how the national and international communities can support one another within this climate.

Presentations for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Singapore: IEA President update

The IEA President was also invited to give two presentations for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Singapore on his way to the IEA Council meeting in Beijing. The first presentation was entitled "Cognitive Ergonomics: Applying knowledge of the functioning of the mind to HFE" given to the DSO. This event was hosted by Frederick Tey at the DSO. The presentation was attended by about 20 participants from the DSO. The second presentation was entitled "Human-Centered Systems for Sustainability, Future Energy, and AI" which was given at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). This event was hosted by Angela Tan (SUSS) and KC Yong (HFESS). The event was attended by around 60 participants.

Columbian International Ergonomics Congress 2025: IEA President update

The IEA President was also invited to give an online presentation entitled "Ergonomics/Human Factors for sustainability" for the 1st Colombian International Ergonomics Congress 2025: Innovation, Well-being and Sustainability hosted by the María Cano University Foundation and the Sociedad Colombiana de Ergonomia. The Congress was extremely well attended with several hundred online attendees and presenters from HFE societies across South America.

IEA at ACE: Vice-president Secretary-General Update

The IEA’s Vice-President Secretary General was invited to speak about IEA at the annual conference of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists – Association Canadienne d’ergonomie (ACE) held in Québec city, Canada, 6-9 October with the theme “The heart of ergonomic interventions: People”. During lunch hour on day 2 of the congress, Nancy introduced opportunities to be involved in IEA Technical Committees, and free learning resources including IEA publications and webinars. Several people approached her afterward for more details.

News from Advisory Group on Standardization

The Advisory Group on Standardization (AGS) was re-established in 2025 as an ad hoc group of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), with Dr. Masaaki Mochimaru appointed as Chair. Dr. Mochimaru has contributed to ISO Technical Committee 159 (Ergonomics) for more than 25 years. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, brings together about 170 countries and over 200 technical committees. TC 159, established in 1974, develops international standards on human factors and ergonomics (HFE). It includes four subcommittees and two working groups, and has produced more than 160 standards covering areas such as anthropometry, biomechanics, human–system interaction, physical environment, and service ergonomics. As the IEA serves as a liaison organization to TC 159, AGS enables IEA members to access information and share input with ISO. AGS currently includes representatives from Japan, China, Taiwan, Canada, the Netherlands, India, the UK, Singapore, and Brazil, and plans to share highlights from ISO/TC 159 through future NewsBriefs.

Call for Book Chapter Submissions on Human-AI Team Testbeds, Metrics, and Concepts

A group of researchers (Erin Chiou, Douglas Lange, Jason Wong, and Julie Marble) are currently seeking book chapter submissions for an edited volume to be published with CRC Press. Chapter submissions should describe the work of designing, building, implementing, or evaluating a human-AI team testbed, metric, or concept. Manuscript submissions from authors based in countries outside of the U.S. are especially encouraged and may be granted extensions to the planned submission deadlines depending on chapter fit. WMSD’s in High-Risk Occupations: Cross-National insights from Manufacturing, Construction, and Handicraft Industries in Asia: The Technical Committee on Musculoskeletal Disorders Webinar Series, 20 November 2025, 12h00 UTC

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) continue to be one of the most pressing occupational health challenges worldwide. Although WMSDs are a global concern, their prevalence, risk factors, and intervention strategies vary considerably across cultural and industrial contexts. This presentation, drawing on empirical studies and field investigations conducted in Taiwan, Thailand, and China, offers cross-national insights into WMSDs. Through case studies involving construction workers, semiconductor manufacturing operators, and handicraft artisans, it identifies key ergonomic risk factors such as repetitive motions, awkward postures, and manual material handling. The research also addresses how contextual factors, ranging from work practices and organizational culture to the implementation of ergonomics interventions, shape these risks. The comparative analysis underscores both common challenges and region-specific characteristics, providing implications for developing culturally sensitive and industry-specific ergonomic interventions. By integrating survey results across multiple Asian countries, this presentation highlights relevant occupational health concerns and seeks to foster greater cross-border collaboration in the prevention of WMSDs.

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia is hosting their annual conference in Launceston from 1 to 3 December 2025.

The 15^th International Symposium on Human Factors/Ergonomics in Organizational Design and Management (ODAM), 8 – 10 June, 2026, University of Connecticut

After featuring the Slips, Trips and Falls TC in our previous issue, in this edition, we turn our focus to the Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments TC. The Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments TC was formed as a platform to exchange up to date information on and promote the adoption of an ergonomic lifestyle for children, youth and students.

Objectives of the Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments TC

The purpose of the Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments TC is to provide a forum for the international exchange of scientific technical and ergonomics information related to children and educational environments.

The Committee promotes professional and public awareness of ergonomics related to children of all abilities in all aspects of their lives and the application of ergonomic principles in educational environments.
