The global IEA community is hard at work organising many exciting events, including conferences and webinars, in 2026. Keep up to date with the latest events and news to ensure that your 2026 is filled with all things HF/E. In this edition, the ‘Announcements’ section shares some exciting HF/E news including time-limited reminders and updates on IEA2027. The ‘Upcoming Events’ section includes information concerning two webinars in May and several HF/E events and conferences scheduled for 2026. In the Spotlight on IEA Technical Committees feature, we showcase the new Maritime Human Factors/Ergonomics TC and the important work they are doing to promote the safety, well-being and performance in the global maritime domain. As always, we appreciate the ongoing support and commitment of the global IEA community to share updates that will be of interest to our community. ANNOUNCEMENTS

ILO Ergonomics Hazards Convention

The ILO leadership has voted to accept the background report on ergonomics/human factors led by Carisa Harris (HFES) and to proceed with engagements and discussions towards an international ILO Convention on ergonomics hazards in the workplace for consideration at either the 2029 or 2030 International Labour Conference. The next steps are for the ILO to create a long draft of a Convention in consultation with the IEA and for the ILO to set up a meeting of experts in Geneva in mid-April 2027. The meeting of experts will consist of 8 representatives from governments, 8 representatives from labour, and 8 representatives from industry. The nomination process for the meeting of experts is handled by the ILO but if federated societies have contacts with any of these stakeholder groups that could be encouraged to be nominated as a representative, we would like you to let the IEA Officers know so we can discuss an engagement strategy. The IEA will also have representation at the meeting of experts.

IEA Statement: World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026

The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) joins the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in marking the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2026. This year the theme is ensuring a healthy psychosocial working environment. This includes finding and promoting ways to improve workload and working time stressors through work design aspects such as role clarity, autonomy, support, and fair and transparent processes. The IEA's mission is to advance and promote the science and practice of Ergonomics and Human Factors (E/HF) globally, and to expand the scope of E/HF application and its contribution to people's working lives. The goals of E/HF are to optimise human well-being and overall system performance, and we do this by designing work to fit the worker taking a systemic approach that considers the work being done, the work environment, and the tools and equipment being used. The health and safety of the worker is therefore of paramount importance.

IEA/Kingfar Award and IEA/Tsinghua Award 2026 applications now open – Deadline: 30 June, 2026

The IEA/Kingfar Award is given annually to early career professionals to promote and reward high-quality original research and applications on new and emerging HFE issues or issues specifically related to industrially developing countries, as well as to promote a career path in HFE. Nominees can be from any country including both IDCs and developed countries. Up to 13 winners can be recognised each year, with 8 awards given to PhD students, and 5 awards to early career scholars/researchers (within 10 years of completing a PhD). The award amount is $1,000 for each selected student and $1,500 for each selected early career researcher.

The IEA/Tsinghua Award for Collaborative Human Factors/Ergonomics Education is given annually to honor persons (e.g. researchers, teachers) who, through international and/or inter-regional collaboration, have made significant and outstanding contributions to the success of postgraduate educational programs that include human factors/ergonomics (HFE) courses or substantial HFE content in the curriculum. The intent of this award is to mobilize educators worldwide for HFE education. Up to 4 programs may be awarded. Each program may be represented by up to two nominees. The award consists of a monetary prize of $4,000 per selected program."

FINAL CALL: IEA Fellow Award Applications Deadline 30 April 2026

The call for nominations for the 2026 IEA Fellow Awards is currently open. The IEA Fellow Award is given to recognize extraordinary or sustained, superior accomplishments of an individual. To be considered for the IEA Fellow Award, the candidate must have been a Full Member in good standing of a Federated or Affiliated Ergonomics Society for at least the preceding 10 years, and the candidate must have served the ergonomics community at an international level. In addition, the candidate's distinction as a Human Factors/Ergonomics professional must be demonstrated. Please nominate deserving colleagues by 30 April 2026. April IEA Executive Committee Meeting and visit to IEA2027 venue

24 April, members of the Executive Committee visited the venue for IEA’s triennial congress (23-25 August 2027) within the London’s ExCel Centre. ICC Capital Suite at the east end of the Centre is entirely on the third floor and provides world-class conferencing facilities complemented by skylights in central sections and views on two sides! On-site food within the centre is excellent.

Access is easy via two transit lines (Elizabeth Line of the London Underground – Custom House station as well as the Docklands Light Railway – Prince Regent station) with escalators and elevators available. Many hotel options at various price points are within an easy walk.

Following this site visit, the IEA Executive Committee met on the 25 and 26 April in Nottingham. Each of the officers and Standing Committees provided reports and together discussed the results of their SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) analysis for the IEA. Furthermore, comments shared by attendees of the 5 March IEA virtual Council gathering were incorporated. The proposed plan moving forward will be shared during the 7 May Virtual Council Gathering.

Immediately following these meetings, the CIEHF held their annual congress, where IEA President Andrew Thatcher was an invited speaker launching the build-up to IEA2027 and leading a panel on Future Strategy for Human Factors.

Reminder: Second Virtual Council Gathering of 2026: 7 May

Two times 0700 UTC and 1600 UTC to accommodate participation from around the world. The Zoom meeting link was sent to all IEA Council representatives and IEA Sustaining Members. These 90-minute informal gatherings are an opportunity to exchange on time-sensitive cross-association issues. This session will share the outcome of the IEA SWOT analysis and look for input. If you are a Council representative, please respond to the invitation in your inbox and be part of the discussion!

Passing of Margaret Irene Bullock, IEA Executive Committee trailblazer

The IEA Community was saddened to hear about the passing of Margaret Bullock on 16 January 2026. Margaret was a long-term member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) and served for many years as the HFESA representative on the IEA Council. She served two terms on the IEA’s Executive Committee (1991-1994 and 1994-1997) as Chair of the Education and Training Committee (now called the Professional Standards and Education Standing Committee), being the first woman to serve on the IEA’s Executive Committee. In this role Margaret produced the IEA’s first core competencies document in 1997. In recognition of her service to the international ergonomics community, Margaret was also elected as an IEA Fellow. Margaret was formerly a Professor of physiotherapy at the University of Queensland (the first professor in physiotherapy in Australia) and her loss will be felt particularly by our Australian colleagues. The IEA salutes her service and may she rest in peace.

News from Group on Standardization – TC159/SC4 part-3

AGS continues news from ISO TC159/SC4 (Subcommittee 4: Human-System Interaction). SC4 focuses standardization of ergonomics/human factors, in particular the interaction between and within systems and people. This month, recent activities of SC4/WG9, WG12, Joint WG and Study groups are reported.

1) Working Group 9 “Tactile and haptic interaction”

Scope: The standardization of the ergonomics/human factors of human-system interaction in the field of tactile and haptic interaction, in combination with other modalities, standardization of guidance on human-centred interaction and presentation of information for user interfaces (software and software in combination with hardware), taking into account the wide diversity of users and contexts (stationary, mobile, extended reality, etc), across tactile/haptic modalities (including braille, gesture, and force feedback).

2) Working Group 12 “Image safety”

Scope: The standardization of the ergonomics/human factors of human-system interaction in the field of image safety (human-system safety interaction) for electronic visual displays, to prepare standards with requirements for the design, production, present and supply visual images on or by electronic displays for reducing incidence of undesirable biomedical effects caused during viewing those images, and to issue technical reports relevant to the above areas.

Scope: The standardization of the ergonomics/human factors of human-system interaction through specification of the contents of information items that are generated by human centred design activities (understanding and specifying the context of use, specifying the user requirements, producing design solutions, evaluating the design) as part of the development and operation of an interactive system irrespective of the development approach.

Scope: The focus of ISO/TC159/SC4/SG2 is to investigate new working practices to address the evolution and expansion of scope of human system interaction and the resulting holistic issues, both for and within SC4. This study group will focus on coordination and architecture of ISO/TC159/SC4 and its working groups

Note: SG established at SC4 2021 Plenary. This Study group was set up to investigate new working practices to address holistic issues within SC4 with Jonathan Earthy (BSI) as Leader. This group will investigate the aspects surrounding better coordination of work within SC4/WGs.

5) Study Group 3: “ISO 9241-1 and -2 Preparation”

Scope: The new scope of 9241-1 is different than the existing part 1. The new approach establishes core concepts of human-system interaction, exposing those that are kind of only “implicit” until now. The new scope of 9241-2 is different than the existing part 2. The new approach establishes an holistic understanding of goals as core of the human－centered approach, related task and activities. The SG investigates adapting Activity Theory as paradigm for work on tasks.

Quality Control of Anthropometric Data, Technical Committee on Anthropometry, 12 May 2026, 18h00 UTC

This webinar covers the basics of how to plan and execute an anthropometric survey, and ways to present the results. Both traditional methods (tape and calliper) and scan data collection are included, with an emphasis on data quality and database utility.

Dr. Masaaki Mochimaru – Deputy Director at the Digital Human Research Laboratory (AIST) and AIST Fellow (2023). He has held key leadership roles in ISO standardization, including Chair of ISO TC159/SC3 (2008–2016), ISO PC329 (2020–2024), and currently ISO TC324.

Dr. Makiko Kouchi (D.Sci) – Senior Researcher at AIST. Her work focuses on human body variation (growth, secular change, movement) and 3D body shape modeling. She is also a recognized expert in anthropometry (1D & 3D), including measurement error quantification and 3D scanner validation protocols.

Informal Work Technical Committee joint webinar with Workplace Health Without Border: "Assessing Physical Risks of Young Workers in Agriculture: Special Groups Need Special Methods", 28 May, 14 00 UTC

This first webinar organized in collaboration with Workplace Health Without Borders (WHWB; https://whwb.org/) draws on recent research in the vanilla supply chain in Madagascar where workers operate largely under informal arrangements. We will demonstrate how risk assessments tailored to the local situation can be helpful to communities and buyers alike in reducing ergonomic risks among those who produce such desirable agricultural products as vanilla. The 15th International Symposium on Human Factors/Ergonomics in Organizational Design and Management (ODAM), sponsored by the IEA Organizational Design and Management Technical Committee and the HFES Macroergonomics Technical Group, will take place from 8 – 10 June 2026, at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus. The conference theme is "Innovating for the Future: Human-Centered Organizational Design in the Age of Emerging Technologies and Evolving Work." ODAM 2026 is breaking boundaries with a two-campus global experience: We’re reimagining what it means to host a truly global symposium. 1^st International Conference on Informal Work: Health, Safety and Well-being. 9-11 November 2026, Cali, Colombia

This First International Conference on Informal Work, themed ‘Health, Safety and Wellbeing of Workers’, seeks to generate a space for dialogue and reflection to better understand the reality of informal work globally, exchange experiences, and propose innovative methods for improving the health, safety, and wellbeing of informal workers.

This three-day in-person conference aims to bring together academic, institutional, community and worker perspectives to reflect, discuss, and share experiences regarding the multifaceted realities of informal labour. From an interdisciplinary and global standpoint, the conference will address the implications for health, safety, wellbeing, labour conditions, and social protection.

The conference will summon researchers, policy makers, labour organizations, civil society, public institutions, occupational health and safety practitioners, ergonomics specialists, professional societies in the health sector, and community actors interested in analyzing and debating occupational health and safety for the informal sector, and the transformations of informal work within rural, urban, and new digital technologies contexts.

The Conference will be organized and hosted by the School of Public Health at Universidad del Valle in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, and co-organized by the Global Coalition on Informal Workers’ Health, Safety, and Wellbeing (GCIW), with endorsement from the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH), Scientific Committee on Occupational Health in Small-Scale Enterprises and the Informal Sector (SC OHSSEIS), the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) and in collaboration with other academic networks and national and international organizations including the Sociedad Colombiana de Ergonomía (SCE), the International Labor Organization (ILO), International Social Security Association (ISSA), and Women in Informal Employment Globalizing & Organizing (WIEGO).

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) 30 Nov – 2 Dec 2026, Sydney, Australia

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) is accepting abstracts for their 2026 conference, to be held 30th Nov – 2nd Dec at the Mercure Sydney hotel. Researchers or practitioners in any work sector or domain of HFE (i.e. physical, cognitive, organisational) are welcome to submit an abstract to be part of HFESA26. Guidance on submitting an abstract for a research presentation, industry presentation, lightening talk or workshop is available here:

SPOTLIGHT ON IEA TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TC)

After featuring the AI and Work TC in our previous issue, in this edition, we turn our focus to the Maritime Human Factors/Ergonomics Technical Committee. The Maritime Human Factors/Ergonomics TC is a special interest group that brings together human factors/ergonomics specialists and enthusiast individuals from the maritime sector. The Maritime Human Factors/Ergonomics TC aims to advance and promote the contribution of human factors and ergonomics towards a balance between safety, performance, mental health and well-being of people working in the global maritime sector. The TC will develop a collective position on key challenges and opportunities for maritime HFE, foster collaboration among researchers and practitioners, and represent the field in international maritime dialogues.

Objectives of the TC:

a. Establish and maintain an international forum for individuals and organisations interested in maritime HF/E to connect, collaborate and share knowledge. b. Raise awareness and understanding of HF/E among key maritime stakeholders, including regulators, industry leaders, industry bodies (e.g., OCIMF, BIMCO, INTERTANKO, RIGHTSHIP, ICS), national and international professional organisations (e.g., the Nautical Institute, Honourable Company of master mariners), seafarers and shore-based managers and operators. c. Develop and disseminate evidence-based solutions, position papers, guidance and tools to support integration of HF/E principles into maritime policy, regulation, design and operations. d. Support capacity building and education by promoting HF/E training and professional development opportunities in maritime contexts. e. Represent the field of maritime HF/E within the IEA and contribute to cross-sector initiatives on safety and resilience

Joining a TC is free and there are no qualifying criteria (just that you are a member of a federated society) to join and to participate. You can also join more than one TC if your interests are broader. A list of the TCs can be found on the IEA’s website:
