Japan Expo World Assembly declaration aims for safer, healthier work

The IEA was part of a landmark Founding Declaration to advance safer, healthier, more sustainable workplaces worldwide at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka-Kansai, Japan.

The Declaration launched the World Assembly of Occupational Safety, Health, and Well-being Professionals and Stakeholders, a network that will collaborate on commitments promoting safety and well-being, driving global collaboration, empowering future leaders, and creating a roadmap of concrete actions between now and 2030.

The launch took place during the four-day programme "Days on safety, health and well-being" organised by the Global Initiative for Safety, Health and Well-being at the EXPO2025 and Beyond (GISHW). It is the first time in more than 170 years that safety and health at work has featured at a World Expo and shows how vital good work is to this Expo's overarching theme: "Designing future society for our lives."

Today's signing is the start of collaboration over the next five years and beyond. It marks a global effort to protect the lives and livelihoods of billions of working people worldwide.

The Declaration, supported by leaders in the occupational safety and health (OSH) profession, sets the foundation for future collaborative action and emphasizes that occupational safety, health, and well-being are essential to building the societies we want to live and work in.

Key commitments:

The Founding Declaration calls for collective action from governments, businesses, policymakers, and OSH professionals worldwide. The signatories commit to:

· promote safety and well-being in workplaces, integrating proactive risk management, inclusive design, and ethical technology use

· drive global collaboration to share best practices and expertise, particularly in response to digital transformation, climate change, and demographic shifts

· empower future leaders in the OSH field by ensuring diverse perspectives and fostering innovation, and

· create a shared 2030 Roadmap that will turn these commitments into concrete actions, informed by the outcomes of workshops at Expo 2025.

Together, the signatories pledge to make tangible progress, fostering collaboration and driving the global OSH agenda forward to create safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces for all.

The declaration was signed by the Chair of the IEA's Advisory Group on Standardisation, Prof. Masaaki Mochimaru, on behalf of the IEA.

Human Kinetics and Ergonomics 80th Anniversary

I was very fortunate to be invited to the Human Kinetics and Ergonomics Department's 80th Anniversary celebrations on 15 and 16 July 2025 at Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa. Of course, the Department didn't start off including the name "Ergonomics", this came in the 1990's, but it has been the power-house of developing human factors and ergonomics (HFE) in South Africa and across the African continent. The Department was instrumental in establishing the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA in 1985, so ESSA is also celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year) and a Department staff member or graduate has always featured on the Executive Committee of ESSA, often as the President. For example, the current ESSA President and previous NewsBriefs editor, Sma Ngcamu-Tukulula, is a graduate from the Department. The Department has also contributed significantly to the IEA. Previous Department Chair, Patricia Scott, was IEA's Chair of the Industrially Developing Countries Standing Committee from 2000 to 2006. Current Head of Department, Andrew Todd, was the IEA's Chair of the International Development Standing Committee from 2015 to 2021 and the Chair of the Strategic Development Ad-hoc Committee from 2021 to 2024. Department staff member, Jonathan Davy, was the IEA's Communications and Public Relations Standing Committee Chair from 2021 to 2024. And graduate student, Abigail du Plessis, has been editing the IEA's NewsBriefs for the last year. The Department continues to produce high-quality graduates that dominate the list of national certified HFE professional lists, high-quality research published in national and international journals, and general leadership on the value of HFE. I was honoured to join many other ESSA and University luminaries in celebrating these wonderful achievements.

ISO 45001 revision

ISO 45001 (the ISO standards on OHS) are currently being revised. The Committee Draft consultation for the revision of ISO 45001 has just opened and will remain open until Friday, 19 September 2025.

This could be a good opportunity to reflect on whether HFE considerations are adequately addressed in the draft ISO CD 45001 and whether there is room to strengthen the presence of HFE in the revised standard.

The IEA does not have direct representation on TC283, ISO Technical Committee that develops OHS standards, so comments mist be submitted via National Standardisation Bodies during this consultation period. Many HFE societies may have good connections with national representatives of TC283 and we would therefore encourage you to lobby your national standardisation bodies for the inclusion of HFE in the revised ISO 45001. The more comments we get, the more likely we are to be taken seriously.

ILO Occupational Safety and Health Foresight journey:

The ILO would like to get input on their OSH Foresight journey. You are therefore warmly invited to take part in their first Delphi Questionnaire and help us extend its reach across your network. The survey is accessible to external contributors via this public link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9C57VYV

Please share it within your network—especially with individuals who can offer key insights from different geographical, economic, social, environmental, and political perspectives. Diverse inputs are essential to shaping an inclusive and forward-looking vision for occupational safety and health.

This first round is aimed at surfacing key signals of change. A second round will follow to prioritise these findings and guide the expert panel discussions on future OSH drivers.

SPOTLIGHT ON IEA TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TC)

After featuring the Resilience Engineering TC in our previous issue, in this edition, we turn our focus to the Ergonomic Work Analysis and Training TC.

The Ergonomic Work Analysis and Training (EWAT) Technical Committee was created around the question of the relations between training, ergonomic work analysis and the transformation of working situations.

Throughout the exchanges within the EWAT network, two lines of thought unfolded: the training of ergonomics work analysis, and the use of work analysis for the improvement or design of training interventions. Both share a common theoretical and methodological background based on three pillars: the focus on real work, the adoption of a systemic and participatory approach, and the intentional emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach.

Focusing on the contributions of ergonomics and its analysis of work on vocational training, and more particularly on the contributions of activity analysis in real world or training situations , the research of this network has explored various facets of research-intervention in ergonomics in the field of training (i.e formal training at work or in educational settings, workplace learning, internship, transmission and knowledge sharing etc).

Four main thematic areas:

1.        The analysis of activity in the work situation: to identify the critical skills that should be trained to equip workers; to design teaching tools adapted to the needs of future trainees and trainers; to identify the acquired skills that can be transferred for professional reconversion; and, to identify the difficulties of appropriating the knowledge and know-how seen in training.

2.        Training in and through the analysis of the work activity of occupational or workers health, risk prevention actors or trainers in order to debate their approach/understanding of the work, the actions to be taken to transform their skills.

3.        Analysis of the individual and collective work of transmitting knowledge and know-how in work situations (tutoring, companionship, or in an educational setting).

4.        The analysis of the learning activity to identify the work and learning conditions encountered by trainees that may enhance or obstruct their work for the appropriation of knowledge.

This work has also given rise to a reflection on the evaluation of such programs and their impact on skills development, health and performance in training situations and at work.

Objectives of the Ergonomic Work Analysis and Training TC

The objectives of the Ergonomic Work Analysis and Training TC are to:

·      To develop a research community interested in the relations between training, work, health and professional development.

·      To advance the understanding of the interactions between training, work, health and practice of ergonomics.

·      To organize collaborative events for researchers and practitioners interested in this area.

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TCs):

The IEA’s Technical Committees (TCs) are ad-hoc special interest groups that are formed as a platform to exchange up-to-date information on and discuss a particular HFE field. More information is available at: https://iea.cc/leadership/technical-committees/

TC Creation

Reminder: If you, with at least 5 colleagues, share a passion for a particular special interest area which does not exist as a Technical Committee (TC) and you wish to create a new TC, please contact stpchair@ iea.cc for formalizing this. The process is easy and free!

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TCs) SIGN UP SHEET

The IEA Technical Committees (TCs) are seeking to expand their membership and invite new members from federated societies. To facilitate this, we have created a sign-up form that provides an overview of the role of Technical Committees, including their four primary functions. By completing the form, you can express your interest in joining up to two TCs. Once submitted, TC administrators will review your submission and reach out for further details.

Sign-up form for Technical Committees: https://forms.gle/mMpZ9V9PhBGHPBHQ6

Joining a TC is free and there are no qualifying criteria (just that you are a member of a federated society) to join and to participate. You can also join more than one TC if your interests are broader. A list of the TCs can be found on the IEA’s website:

https://iea.cc/leadership/technical-committees/.

You are always welcome to reach out to TC chairs in addition.
